What is Placenta Encapsulation?
The placenta is the organ that surrounds the fetus in the womb and allows for the exchange of nutrients, blood, and waste with the mother. Placenta encapsulation can be seen similar to taking a food supplement or vitamin. We consume a variety of foods to nourish our bodies and replenish nutrients (think spinach for iron or oranges for vitamin c), so consuming the placenta can be seen as a supplement for your postpartum recovery and healing.
Consuming your placenta can have numerous benefits including increased energy, increased milk supply, balancing of hormones, increased iron and blood support, emotional support, and much more!
Prolactin + Oxytocin = decreased risk of low milk supply
Energy: B vitamins (take when baby is awake, can be similar to the effects of a coffee)
Iron
Decreased bleeding (great for those with a history of hemorrhage)
Making Your Decision
Remember, every placenta is different and although there is research surrounding what nutrients are found within the placenta, your placenta is unique and how your body receives the placenta can vary.
Always check in with your body and how you are feeling after taking the placenta capsules.
Each person’s experience with their placenta is a personal one. Individual assessment of one’s risk of developing a postpartum mood disorder, having milk supply issues, or possibly struggling from blood loss after giving birth may be the most appropriate guide in determining whether or not placenta encapsulation is right for that person.
